Intro to Music Notation

 level 1 | AGES 5-10

Overview

Learn how to read and write Western music notation through games and activities designed especially for elementary-school aged students in a fun, small-group setting. Students will learn how to visually and aurally recognize note values, rhythmic patterns, pitches, and intervals; they will reinforce these skills through the use of instruments, sight-reading and ear-training exercises, and developmentally appropriate music-making activities.

Prerequisites: No prior music experience is necessary. This is a great choice for beginner students who have expressed interest in learning how to play music, but are unsure about where to begin or which instrument to choose, as the skills developed in this class will be applicable to any instrument.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child doesn't have any musical experience. Should we still sign up?

Absolutely! Prior music experience is not necessary. This is a great option for beginner students who have expressed interest in learning to play music but are unsure about how to begin or which instrument to choose.

What happens after Level 1?

This class is part of a 5-part series. Each session is 10 weeks long, with one to two sessions being offered throughout the school year. By the end of the fifth level, students will have achieved competencies in musical literacy, creative expression, and critical evaluation that meet and exceed the curricular goals outlined for elementary students by Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

We encourage students to continue with the following level each semester.

What if we must miss a class?

Fees will not be adjusted for individual missed classes, but you can request to sit in a makeup class at an alternative timeslot if space allows. In the event a class is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, we will notify you and schedule a suitable makeup date.
