Overview

Be part of a fun and exciting community street drum ensemble designed especially for beginner percussion students ages 11 to 16. Students will learn to play drum grooves and street beats together as an ensemble, working toward public performance opportunities at select local events.

The Fall 2024 semester will focus on the development of drumming fundamentals, so it’s the perfect time for beginners and those with little to no percussion experience to join! We’ll practice fundamentals on drum pads and perform true street-style on bucket drums, working toward a full-blown drumline ensemble in the future. We especially encourage youth who would like to grow with the program and take on future leadership roles to sign up now.

And this class is not just for our future marching drummers! Students will also learn essential rudiments, build strong working knowledge of rhythmic concepts and notation, and develop proper stick control and techniques applicable to many different percussion instruments, including snare drum, drumset, marching percussion, and more.

Prerequisites: No prior music experience is necessary. Students must be age 11 or above. Students must purchase drumsticks, practice pad, and adjustable snare stand prior to class start date and bring them to each class.

What’s Included

  • Ten classes, which meet for an hour each week between September 12 and November 14. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled periodically through the semester.
  • Student-centered group instruction tailored to participants’ interests, abilities, and progress.
  • Public performance opportunities for all participants and future leadership opportunities for returning and commited participants.
  • All students will have the opportunity to perform at public events.
    Tentative Fall 2024 Performance Dates: Sunday, November 10, and Saturday, November 23.

Frequently Asked Questions

My child doesn't have any musical experience. Should we still sign up?

Absolutely! Prior music or percussion experience is not necessary.

My child is not yet 11 years old. Can they still participate?

Participants must be at least 11 years old to participate in this class. Younger students can enroll in our Percussion Explorers class (for ages 6 to 10) or our Percussion Level 1 class (for ages 8 to 12).

What supplies are required to be purchased?

Prior to the start of class, participants should purchase marching drumsticks, a 12″ practice pad, and an height-adjustable concert snare stand, an upfront investment of about $100, as recommended below:

  • Sticks: Vic Firth Corpsmaster Signature Snare Drumsticks  Ralphie Jr. (available from Steve Weiss Music for $14.99 per pair), or similar
  • Practice Pad: Evans HQ 12″ RealFeel 2-Sided Practice Pad (available from Steve Weiss Music for $29.99; also available on Amazon), or similar 2-sided pad at least 12″ in diameter with one side hard black rubber material
  • Stand: Any adjustable concert snare stand that can adjust to the diameter of your practice pad and adjust height to waist-level of player. These vary in prices, depending on brand and durability. You can find them on Amazon starting at $50.
What if we must miss a class?

Fees will not be adjusted for individual missed classes, but you can request to sit in a makeup class at an alternative timeslot if space allows. In the event a class is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, we will notify you and schedule a suitable makeup date.
